Global Merger: HSF & Kramer Levin

The merger between Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel is final. The new firm has 2,700 lawyers and ranks among the top 30 globally. This follows seven months of intense talks.

With $2.7 billion in projected revenue and 26 offices, it marks the second major UK-US merger in two years, after Allen & Overy’s merger with Shearman & Sterling in 2024.

“Growth is essential in today’s changing world,” said Laura Orlando, Italy managing partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, in an interview with MAG. She noted a trend toward legal industry consolidation. Orlando highlighted HSF’s previous mergers and the firm’s focus on strengthening its presence in the US, a growing market.

The new firm will be named Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer in the UK and HSF Kramer in the US. The integration process begins now.
