According to the firm, the project is among the largest hydrogen projects currently announced in Germany. From 2032, the plant is to supply green hydrogen for industry, mobility and energy. The final investment decision is still pending and depends largely on the further development of European regulation.

With the project, EWE could become one of the leading producers of green hydrogen in Germany, alongside the 320-megawatt electrolyser already under construction in Emden, East Frisia, on which Kapellmann had also advised EWE. The Emden plant is due to be completed at the end of 2027, with steel producer Salzgitter as anchor customer.

Kapellmann’s team advising EWE on the planned joint venture was led by Dr. Thomas Bunz and comprised corporate, tax, real estate and energy law specialists from the firm’s Düsseldorf and Munich offices.
