Weisse, Moltmann & Willems has written a great article on the European Patent Office (EPO) allowing patent applications for Coloured Drawings.
Starting 1 October 2025, the European Patent Office (EPO) will accept colour drawings in European patent applications, a move toward more modern and flexible filing practices.

Background
Previously, only black-and-white drawings were allowed. A decision by the EPO President on 7 July 2025 now permits colour and greyscale drawings, limited to electronic submissions.
Impact for Applicants
This change enables clearer presentation of technical content. Colour can help:
- Reduce interpretation errors
- Illustrate functions and processes
- Distinguish components or material layers
